Core Sampler - a poem by Cathy Carroll
Winter Fruit
Dark rivers flow toward
the ocean.
Dark nights turn
to day.
Who asked you to swallow
this bitter winter fruit?
So cold
no sunlight warmed it
to a sweet
burst of juice.
All it offers is
bitter flesh
harsh taste
no hope of rain.
