NOWW Announces the 2011 Kouhi and Burnford Award Recipients

The Northwestern Ontario Writers Workshop is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Elizabeth Kouhi Award and the Sheila Burnford Builders Award for outstanding contributions to the literature of Northwestern Ontario.

The Elizabeth Kouhi Award, named in honour of Thunder Bay poet Elizabeth Kouhi, is awarded each year to a writer whose body of work has a significant history of contributing to the literature of Northwestern Ontario. The 2011 Elizabeth Kouhi Award will be presented to Thunder Bay’s Bill MacDonald. Bill MacDonald has worked as a log­ger, weath­er­man, immi­gra­tion offi­cer, school­teacher and writer. He is the author of is the author of many books, most recently Sirens, The Quarry, Ruby’s Last Ride and Other Stories, and Shadows at Sunset, all pub­lished by Borealis Press.



The Sheila Burnford Builders Award, named for writer Sheila Burnford, whose beloved story The Incredible Journey was set in Northwestern Ontario, was first awarded in 2009 to recognize a “builder”— someone who has made outstanding contributions to publishing, promoting, or supporting the literature of Northwestern Ontario. The recipients of the 2011 Burnford Award are Barb Matousek and Wendy MacDonald of Sioux Lookout. Barb and Wendy are the co-chairs of the Sioux Lookout Literacy Committee. In this capacity they have organized events to promote literacy and literature in Sioux Lookout and in the north since 2002, creating opportunities for writing and literary learning and exchange, such as the annual Sioux Lookout Literacy Festival, that have reached thousands of children and adults in Northwestern Ontario remote communities.

The Kouhi and Burnford Awards will be presented at NOWW’s annual Literary Awards Party and Fundraising event on Saturday, May 21, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at the Current River Community Center, 450 Dewe Street, Thunder Bay. Call for Nominations: Kouhi and Burnford Award

Nominations are open for the 2011 NOWW Literary Awards: the Elizabeth Kouhi Award for outstanding contributions to the literature of Northwestern Ontario;and for the Sheila Burnford Builders Award, which can be awarded to an individual or an organization.

Please send a one‐page letter stating the category, the name of your nominee,and why you believe your nominee is deserving of this recognition to admin@nowwwriters.org by April 1, 2011. Nominees need not be members of NOWW. The awards will be made at NOWW’s Literary Awards Party, date to be announced.

Past winners of the Elizabeth Kouhi Award are: Elizabeth Kouhi, Elinor Barr, Charles Wilkins, Thunder Bay Writers Guild, Rosalind Maki, Penny Petrone, Mary Frost, Jean E. Pendziwol, Dorothy Colby, and Hazel Fulford.

Past winners of the Sheila Burnford Builders Award are Thunder Bay Public Library and Sleeping Giant
Writers Festival.

Nominate a winner

This is a friendly reminder that nominations for the 2010 NOWW Literary Awards are now open! Nominations for both the Elizabeth Kouhi Award and Sheila Burnford Builders Award are welcome!

The Kouhi Award is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to literature in Northwestern Ontario. The Burnford Builders Award may go to either an individual or organization.

Deadline is April 1, 2010. Please email nominations in the form of a one-page letter
which will include the award category, your nominee's name, and why you believe
your nominee is deserving of this recognition to admin@nowwwriters.org
