Librarian Helen Cimone, the Book Bag Lady, Strikes again.

You may not belong to a reading group.  You may not even live in Thunder Bay.  But still the list of books bought by librarian Helen Cimone for the book bags is always an intersting one to spark interest in a book you might not have considered.  Here is the latest list.  I have read the Cellist of Sarajevo and Fingersmith and would add  a personal recommendation for both.

But wait, there's more! At the end of this post is a list of all the book bags available.  Yow!

Hello Joan,
We have seven new titles in our book club collection:

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
Deafening by Frances Itani
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See
The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
The Thirteen by Susie Moloney

These two titles were generously donated by local book clubs:

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein was sponsored by the Come as You Are Book Club
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters was sponsored by the Country Neighbours Book Club

A big thank you to both of these clubs for their great donations to our collection.

If anyone is interested in reserving any of these titles, please email or call me. I have also attached a printable list of all titles in the book club format, as well as the link to the "availability spreadsheet". These documents have both been recently updated with the most current titles.

A Letter from our wonderful Book Bag Lady, Helen Cimone

Hello Everyone

It's that time of year again when we get to add new titles to our Book Club in a Bag collection. The selection sure has grown since we started this services some years ago. Seven years ago we had 10 titles and now we are up to 90! So, if anyone has any suggestions for books that you think would make a good book club read, please forward them to me by September 15.

Also, there are two new titles that have been recently added. The Dewey Diner's Book Club has generously donated 10 copies of "A Reliable Wife" by Robert Goolrick. The Nipigon Public Library Book Club sent over copies of "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" by Alan Bradley. Both of these titles are now available for reserving. A big thank you to both of these groups.

Hope to hear from you soon Thanks

Let's support our favourite Thunder Bay organization.  Plus, library lovers, a new and larger Mary J. Black building is in the works - yeah!  If you want to start a book club, contact Helen and ask about the Book Bag service.  Also new titles --- mmm, I am going to suggest Helen purchase Nelson Mandela's autobiography which I believe is a great non-fiction choice.  Fiction?  The Golden Mean by Annabel Lyon and Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.  These are a couple of my favourites from the last three months but then there are Too Much Happiness by the incomparable Alice Munro and  The Master by Colm Toibin.  Mmm - too many good books out there!  PS If you have not read Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, try it.  A treat, a sparkling mystery with a ten year old girl as detective..

It's In the Bag, the Book Bag,that is!

More book bags have arrived at the library available for book clubs to borrow. So says Helen Cimone who e mails us to say the new titles are Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout and Children of My Heart by Gabrielle Roy.

Both sets of books were generously donated by the Text in the City Book Club.

The book bag idea is one of the most popular library services. A book club can borrow a set of books, thus saving members from the expense of purchase. There are dozens of titles to choose from.

E mail Helen for a list and if your group wants to reserve a set of books, please email or call:

The Books are in the Bag

Good news for book clubs. The book bags have just multiplied, courtesy of the Thunder Bay Library. Any club may reserve to borrow a bag of books, distribute to members and return after the next meeting.
And the new books available are:

In the Land of Long Fingernails by Charles Wilkins
Lottery by Patricia Wood
Digging to America by Anne Tyler
The Time in Between by David Bergen
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
Factory Voice by Jeanette Lynes
The Gargoyle by Andrew Davicson
The Shack by William P. Young
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda N. Adichie
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Many thanks to Helen Cimone of the library. I have a few favourites on this list, particularly The Time in Between by David Bergen. A Short History of Tractors in the Ukraine by Marina Lewycka and In the Land of Long Fingernails by Charles Wilkins. I found Digging to America by Anne Tyler a bit over the top. Love to hear opinions about the others. E mail me at jbaril@tbaytel.net.
