Step Write Up. Local Writing Contest - Open to All

New this year is a screenwriting competition as well as the usual poetry and fiction contest.  Anyone, anywhere, is eligible.

2011 Contest Categories and Rules


Poetry
• One entry consists of 3‐5 poems.
• Combined line count from all poems must be between 50 and 100 lines.
• Poems may be in any style or theme.
• Final Judge: Anne Compton

Fiction
• Entry must be between 2000 and 3500 words (not including title).
• Final Judge: Fred Stenson

Scriptwriting
• Length is maximum 10 pages, with a running time of 10 minutes or less.
• Cast is maximum four (4) people.
• Format can be stage, screen, or television.
• No film treatments.
• Final Judge: Dave Carley

Eligible Writers
• This contest is open to individuals aged 18 and over.
Deadline Entries must be postmarked or hand‐delivered no
later than midnight, March 14, 2011.

Rules
• Entries must be original and unpublished
• Entries must not bear author’s name; entries that do will be disqualified.
• Authors agree that winning entries may be read at NOWW’s year‐end celebration and published online
on NOWW’s website and in NOWW Magazine without compensation to the author beyond the awarded prize money. With these exceptions, the author retains copyright in all work submitted.
Winning entries may be edited prior to publication.
• Winners must provide a photo and brief biography.
• Entries will not be returned.

Judging Process
• Judging is blind.
• Screeners will select six finalists per category to be sent to a final judge.
• Final judges reserve the right not to select winners if, in their opinion, none of the entries is of publishable
quality.

Results
• Winners will be announced at NOWW’s Literary Awards Party and on our website, nowwwriters.org, on or after May 1, 2011.

Prizes
Each category is awarded a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize.
• 1st prize is awarded $125.
• 2nd prize is awarded $75.
• 3rd prize is awarded $50.

Entry Fee
• Entry is free for NOWW members in good standing.
• Non‐members must pay a fee of $10 in either Canadian or US funds per entry.
• Cheques must be payable to NOWW and be included with the entries.

How to Submit
• Up to two (2) entries may made per category.
• Prose manuscripts must be typed and doublespaced.
• Poetry must be typed and single‐spaced in a 12pt standard font.
• Script manuscripts must be typed and be formatted for either stage, screen, or television.
• Each entry must include, on a separate piece of paper:
• author’s name
• address
• phone number
• e‐mail address
• title (if any)
• category
• line count (poetry only)
• word count (fiction only)
• page count (scriptwriting only)
• how you heard about the contest
• Counts must be exact, not estimates.
