Joe Fiorito, a native of Fort William, is a city columnist for the Toronto Star newspaper. He won Canada’s National Newspaper Award for Columns in 1995.

He is the author of five books, including a best-selling memoir, “The Closer We Are To Dying,” which was also chosen as the first selection of Thunder Bay Reads. His novel, “The Song Beneath The Ice”, won the City of Toronto Book Award in 2003.

His most recent book, “Union Station” is an appreciation of the city of Toronto, based in part on the newspaper column he writes three times a week in Canada’s largest circulation daily newspaper.

Joe Fiorito was born in Westfort and checked out his first books from the Mary J. L. Black Library.
