A Letter From Kenora's Literary Festival, Word on The Water

What is Word on the Water?

It is a weekend long literary festival that attracts like-minded people from across Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. The weekend includes book readings, author panel discussions, workshops, youth activities, and a book fair. The weekend starts with a Friday night First Nations Gala called Writing in Four Directions and it will star members of the Aboriginal Writers Collective of Winnipeg. Saturday daytime will feature two streams of programming with over a dozen local and regional authors. Saturday evening is the Saturday Night Page Turner event with award-winning authors Armin Wiebe and Wayne Tefs. Sunday will be a day of workshops for professional, emerging, and aspiring authors.

A general outline of the weekend.

Friday, October 21 – First Nations Writing Event – Writing in Four Directions – 7pm – 9pm. This evening event will feature members of the Aboriginal Writers Collective of Winnipeg, participants to be named later.

Saturday, October 22 – Daytime Programming – 10 am – 5pm
The daytime programming will feature two streams of events. In the Minis Hall (larger room) will feature six sessions of panel discussions during the day, along with a book-fair. The Reading Room will feature author readings separated into six sessions.

Participating authors include Mike Aiken, Jon Thompson, Richard Brignall, Rebecca Hofer, Helen Kubisewsky, Craig Russell, Dennis Cooley, Susan Rocan, Rae Bridgeman, Helen Norrie, Karen Dudley, David Annandale, and Aboriginal Writers Collective members.
Saturday, October 22 – Saturday Night Page Turner with Armin Wiebe and Wayne Tefs – 7pm – 9pm.

Sunday, October 23 – Sunday Workshops – Still deciding on the program for this day. We are having fiction, self-publishing, magazine, poetry, and creative non-fiction workshops
