Books on a BC Vacation

Recently I rented a house for a couple of weeks at lovely Crescent Beach near Vancouver. The bookshelves were full of romance novels and mysteries so I read:

Vanishing Point by Marcia Muller
Across a Summer Sea by Lyn Andrews, a weepy historical romance
The Summer I Dared by Barbara Delinsky. Married woman goes to Maine and finds the courage to leave him
Lakeside Cottage by Susan Wiggs. Love with reculsive man, quaint cottage etc.
All the above fun but forgettable.

Then! I went to Indigo and bought William Boyd's latest. Boyd is an uneven writer. His books range from very good to masterpiece. His novel Any Human Heart is, IMHO, one of the greatest novels of the past decade.

His latest, Ordinary Thunderstorms, falls into the masterpiece category. A man wrongly accused of murder goes on the run. An old plot but in the hands of a great writer, a mesmerizing work. I stayed up all night unable to put the book down. Highly recommended.
