Loving Short Shorts

I love short shorts.  Short short stories give us a miniature world in about 500 words. A bouquet of Canadian short shorts blooms in the latest issue of The Walrus, July/August 2010 issue.  Michael Winter brings on a tough boozer who has not only lost his car but also his favourite drinking place.  Lisa Moore writes her usual pastiche of details that cluster together to produce a great miniature story. Linden MacIntrye writes a traditional narrative with his usual satisfying story arc but the story I read three times was written by Heather O'Neill. It  describes a  young Canadian woman who takes a bus trip into the American heartland, gets mugged and that is only the beginning, all in 500 words.  Pick up a copy and enjoy.
