Joan's quick pick of the week.
How I loved
The Winter Palace by Eve Stachniak. I
have been reading historicals since I was a teen, and this is a goodie. Young
orphan, Vavara, finds refuge in the Winter Palace and is soon recruited to spy
on the Empress Elizabeth. But when a
young German princess called Catherine is introduced to the court to marry the goofy heir
to the throne, Vavara finds herself chosing sides in a game of dangerous intrigue. What’s not to love here? Great characters, great plot and first rate
history.
